50lbs GONE!

before:

after:

I fit into my mama's wedding dress!

I am officially under 130lbs! It took a year and half of intense calorie counting/running but I finally reached my goal and I couldn't be more thrilled!! I started my journey at 180lbs. I was unhappy and very un-athletic! I enjoyed eating and watching TV on my butt. I didn't know how to run or portion control. But James loved me for who I was so I was determined to love myself also. Too bad, I didn't. I really wasn't happy. My jeans were tight and most of my clothes looked horrible on me. I didn't like a belly. I was a size 10 (which NOTHING is wrong with a size 10.. it could have been much bigger!!) but I knew I could be smaller. And we were sitting at the table one night with James' cousins and they were all talking about losing weight by calorie counting with this new app. I was eating a brownie. Needless to say, I decided I needed a change. I started the next day. I was disgusted at the weight I saw on the scale and set a goal of 50lbs to shed. I didn't care how long it took, I just wanted it gone. At first, it came off slowly. Like, SUPER slow. I think I was expecting immediate results and that was not the case. Oh, and I was starving! I was only allowed 1200 calories per day. For someone who can eat a lot more than that (in one sitting mind you), I was starving. But then I learned how to eat better and be full. And the weight started coming off and before I knew it, I had lost 10lbs! I was thrilled!!! I knew my main goal of 50lbs was doable but a long way off, so I set little goals. At 170, I didn't want to see that number again and aimed for 165. Every 5lbs was another goal and another victory. Eventually, I needed to buy new pants. I remember walking out with size 8s! Such a fun feeling. And before long, I was into a size 6. I can't tell you the last time I wore a 6! The weight continued to slowly fall off. I learned to run and I ran my 1st race (4K) last year with my friend Tina, and my second race (5K) on my birthday with James. New goal: Half marathon by next year. I've got two in mind.. just have to decide which I want to sign up for. A few months ago, my size 6's were getting too big so I needed to buy new pants again! (First world problems, I know). I walked into Old Navy (because who doesn't love ON jeans!?) looking for some 4's and walked out with 2's. Y'all. That. Doesn't. Happen! To be honest, I was really happy in a size 6. But a size 2.. it's just a bonus. Seriously. Bonus points. Since then, I finally shed the remaining few pounds and I am currently sitting around 128lbs. I want to be in a safe zone between 125-130lbs. Realistically, I don't need to be any smaller and honestly, I'm in a good place. Yeah, I wish my stomach was a little flatter and my boobs would shrink a little but to see how far I've come.. I'm happy. And I proved that it's doable. No secret diet. I still ate what I wanted. I ate bread. I ate ice cream. I ate pizza. I just didn't eat as much. I never denied myself anything that I wanted. Never. I just learned portion control. And exercise was extra. Yes, I learned to run, but I started with walking. I am still not a good runner (ask my neighbor Cody.. hilarious!) but I'm learning and I know I can get better. No magic pill. No magic diet. Just lots of sweat and hard work and self control.

*Side note: now that I have reached my goal, I'm starting to have body image issues. I mentioned that I set little goals within my large goal.. once I hit my final goal, I didn't know how to stop, exactly. I've proven that I know how to lose weight. I don't know how to maintain yet. I'm going to start toning (next week) and pick up my running but my newest challenge is accepting that I don't need to lose any more weight. And I say challenge because that's exactly what it is. A big one. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. Bear with me.. it could be a while but I'll figure it out.

PS: if you have any questions, please ask me. anything. i'm an open book!!

life at the moment

Don't worry about anything. Instead, pray about everything! Tell God what you need and thank him for what he has done. If you do this, you will experience God's peace which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. -Philippians 4:6-7

James leaves in 41 days. For 6 months. For 6 months, I'm going to be a real single mom. On purpose. Will I make it? Yes. Can I do it alone? Heck no. Is it going to suck major? Yes! Will my God sustain me? You bet. I am holding to the promise above.. I will experience God's peace. I will. Promise. I am so thankful for friends and family that are close and willing to help me out. And I am so thankful for a God who loves and cares for me and my children even when I run away in fear. Even when I doubt, he is still there calling me back to him.

I will make it out on top. I will.

blessed

We have officially been at Faith for one year! I remember before we switched last year, hoping we would find a new family and get to know some people at Faith. I remember being terrified to leave PBC. I remember walking in that first day and knowing one other family and that was it. I remember being nervous that we weren't going to make friends or that it would take a long time. I remember hoping that we would belong someday. I remember the smiles and not knowing any of the songs (turns out, our music director writes most of them himself). And I remember feeling like we made a good decision.

I am SO glad we made that decision. We are so close to church. We are involved in a sunday school class. We have made some INCREDIBLE friends. Our kids are involved. I got to know some pretty awesome youth this summer. I am currently teaching some fantastic 8 year old girls during the third hour. I am still involved with my women's bible study on Tuesdays. I have recently started attending the Wednesday night bible study at church (and knowing A TON of folks there!!). I've gotten to know more Faith families in our neighborhood. I've gotten a few more babysitters in my book just in case. Y'all, it's awesome to have such a fantastic family who share a common bond.

I love walking into church and seeing tons of familiar faces. I know their names and they know mine. Refreshing to say the least! I love giving hugs to so many sweet friends that I've seriously known less than a year. Recently, I met a sweet kid down the street who happens to go to Faith. He is good friends with another neighbor and happened to be walking with them one evening. Turns out, he's my newest babysitter for the kids and he's fantastic with them. I realized the day before he came over for the first time, that I'd better meet his mama (you know, so I don't look like a creeper lady down the street). As we got to talking, she told me that she's the choir director for Owen's kids' choir on Wednesday nights. Shut the front door. Talk about a God connection here. And she's precious enough to offer help with the kids when James leaves in January. We just met. Like a week ago. Blessed, y'all. For real.

My mind is not focused so I'm going to wrap this up. More to come. I love bragging on my sweet sweet friends.

NCSU vs. GSU

Football has returned and Dad is happy again!! In typical NCSU fashion, we barely squeaked out a win on Saturday against Georgia Southern but hey, a win is a WIN! That's right.. starting 1-0 isn't bad. Now, we just have to keep it up! It was super hot and I drank a TON of water (and had to pee like every 20 minutes) but we had a blast doing our thing. Good to see old friends and take silly pictures with my sister.

kindergarten

I'm officially a mama of a school kid! What? Yes! Owen started Kindergarten yesterday!!! Still a little surreal that this will be our life for the next 15 years but hey, it had to start sometime. Kiddo has a fantastic teacher and assistant and seems to really enjoy school (so far). He was very excited to check out books from the library yesterday and then head to the computer lab to "play games" today. Crazy. Tomorrow is day 3. Can't believe it.

a few things about me..

1. I enjoy Diet Coke. But I really enjoy drinking Diet Coke from a straw. Like, a fountain drink version. Preferably in a styrofoam cup.
2. When I eat chips out of the bag (yes, I still do this sometimes), I only eat with my pointer finger and thumb. I HATE getting any other fingers "dirty" with chips.
3. I really enjoy cuddling. With my husband. With my kids. With my dogs.
4. I drive with no shoes. Always.
5. I never wear tennis shoes/sneakers unless I am exercising. They are never a part of my daily foot wear when I am out and about. Never.
6. I wear rubber gloves when doing dishes.
7. I have a hard time making "mom friends," especially if our kids are friends. I have this irrational fear that I won't like the mom but I'll have to hang out with her because our kids are friends. Thankfully, I do like all of my current mom friends :)
8. I can't stand it when guys wear too much cologne. I don't need to smell you unless I'm right up on you.
9. When I eat small foods, such as M&Ms or Skittles, I must have an even amount in my mouth. I have a thing for symmetry.
10. Nothing makes me happier than seeing my sweet boys getting along/loving each other.

#GodisGOOD

Even with our setbacks, GOD IS GOOD. All the time! Fast version: James healed up nicely from Lyme's Disease. The spot is gone and he's back to feeling normal. He lost 25ish lbs and was cleared to continue with joining the NG. And it turns out the car problem was a $10 fix! Praise the Lord!

All that said, Monday, James took his oath and was sworn into the NC National Guard! I am so so proud of him and all that God's allowed him to accomplish over these last few months. He will have to go away in January for basic training/AIT training so he won't be home until June of next year. It will be hard with him not here but it's temporary and I have to remind myself, women do this all the time (but they send their husbands off to war). But, I'm not thinking about that until January :). I get to enjoy James being home another few months! So excited for this new adventure!!

Peace.

Setbacks. #bummer

So the week after that super awesome week where the Lord really showed us his hand, we had some major set backs. It started with James finding out that he needed to lose 20-30 lbs to even think of officially joining the NG. For reals? While we were super bummed, we saw God saying, "wait for now," not "NO." So we waited. James was convinced some super cool job was going to come up later on that he wouldn't be able to get if he had joined early. I was convinced someone would die and James wouldn't be able to go to the funeral while away at basic. We went with his less-morbid option. Next up, James was bitten by a tick and contracted Lyme's Disease. Gross. We went to urgent care where they didn't have to even run any tests to confirm (the big bull's eye on his ankle did the trick), and they put him on antibiotics immediately. They, of course, made him sick as a dog. Real cool when you're trying to join the military. To finish up our fun week, James was going to meet me somewhere and when he put the car in drive, something snapped and it wouldn't shift. He was convinced it was the transmission. In case you aren't a car person, transmissions cost like $1000s of dollars, which we definitely don't have sitting around. For reals! We had this super awesome week and now everything is turning upside down. I was convinced that Satan was just bothering us because we were heading in the right path. So in intended to keep a good attitude throughout the entire thing. I refused to let this get me down. I still believed we were doing what the Lord wanted. I just didn't see an end yet.

Mama's Day Off

With hours being flexed constantly, I was off this past Tuesday so I decided to take the kiddos to PUllen Park with my mom. We started the day by going to the movies with my dear friend Piper and her crew. The Lego Movie was still just as funny the 2nd time around! So after the movie, we drove down to the park and hung out until mom met us there with lunch. After our picnic, we rode all the rides and I made the kids walk around the lake with me. Then I decided we should walk up the hill to NCSU and get some ice cream #howlingcowicecream and ride one of the buses around. The kids had such a blast! Then it was home and the boys went out with Pop Pop while Jennifer and I cleaned my kitchen (story for another blog post).

It's looking like I'm off again this upcoming Tuesday. Anyone up for a movie? It's FREE!! I think we're going to see Rio 2. Let me know folks.

Peace.

are you kidding me?

Remember yesterday when all I could do was brag about God's faithfulness? He's done it again! I left work and was going to meet James at Moes for lunch. I was talking to Mom about everything going on and James tried to call me 3 times. I was a little annoyed so I called him back and he said the check engine light had gone off in the car and he was going to see if it would pass inspection. And it DID! Seriously, that light has been on forever and we needed it to go off so we could update the inspection! God is so good to us.

Oh another fun God moment.. I sent the link to this blog to my parents and so they read it last night. Dad texted me this morning, a little in a panic about the money they had given us. I wrote they had graciously given us $300.. turns out they had really given us $500 and dad was concerned that we were missing $200!! He asked me to recount and sure enough, all of it was there! It was like an extra little bonus right when we were least expecting it.

We are still feeling such a peace about this NG thing. Jeff is going to email James the paper work so James can type it instead of write it out. We are hoping to get that started tomorrow. First things first, we are babysitting two sweet kiddos tomorrow for our friends Helen and Jarrod. The boys are so excited to have Paxton and Parker come to play! Praying the weather is nice and hot so we can go swimming and play outside all day!

The Lord is good. He always provides for his children. #blessed #thankful

#operationgetskinny

James and I ran our first 5K on my birthday! Hollar! I've been on this exercising kick for a year now and have lost 36lbs (only 10ish more to go). I've taken up running (jogging with walking in between) and have decided to start racing (to finish, not to win). I ran my first 4K (yes, that's a real thing) with my friend Tina a few months ago and had a lot of fun. I'm a slow runner but like I said, the point is to finish, not to win (at least for me). I asked James if he'd run a 5K with me and he said YES! My next goal is a 10K in September and half marathon by the end of the year or early next year. Go me! For real though, we were talking in Bible study the other week about God giving us our talents and strength and that nothing we do is of our own power. I like to give myself a lot of credit for my weight loss (I've worked really hard to get to where I am), but when I sit and think about it, God's the one who deserves all of the glory. He gave me my working legs and energy to get out there and learn to run. He's given me the determination to get it done. He's allowed my body to respond and lose the extra weight I've been carrying around for far too long. One day, I am determined to enjoy running. So far, not so much. But I do enjoy being healthy and in shape for the first time in my life. And I am so thankful for a sweet husband who has been more than supportive. Still can't believe I talked him into running with me! On to the 10K!

Jehovah Jireh

The LORD provides

Y'all. God is good. So good. He has always shown himself to be faithful. Why do I ever doubt? Ever? He's always faithful to me. Always.

Thursday, June 12. I can't remember what we had going on that day but we were out (most likely hanging outside with the neighbors) and by the time we were going to bed, I smelled this weird burning smell. I immediately unplugged my hair dryer and straightener but the smell was still there. I realized it was coming from my vent so I turned off the system. It was a cool night so I didn't think much of it. By morning, the house was full of smoke and James was completely freaking out. Needless to say, we left he system off for a while and opened all of the windows. Come Sunday, we were ready to turn it back on, and the thermostat didn't work. For reals, the AC is gone. Like, isn't going to turn back on. Bummer. And this week was going to be HOT (think 99ยบ)! We were annoyed but what can you do? We left the windows open and pulled out all 3 fans that we owned and decided to sweat it out. Meanwhile, out paychecks weren't awesome.. we both had taken off time for our birthdays and James doesn't get overtime pay when he doesn't work so his check was just for 40 hours and mine was much less. Thankfully, I had a mini-bonus on mine to make it appear semi-normal. For Father's Day,we decided to build our corn hole boards (when I say "we" I mean I held a board or two while James cut it but then I let him put everything else together). It cost a little less than we had originally calculated so we were pretty excited. While James was building, I went to Walmart and bought fun paint colors and the plan was to paint the boards on Sunday (they still aren't sanded or painted but that will come soon). With mortgage being due, tithe needing to happen (we are SO bad at that!) and corn hole, our bank account was looking less than stellar so fixing the AC was most definitely the last thing on our mind. Oh, and last week the dishwasher broke (or is clogged but same thing right?). James was getting stressed out, as he usually does when we are low on funds, but we were going to eat sandwiches and be ok. We went to lunch on Sunday for Father's Day and hit up Walmart again for "yard shoes" and headed home to do stuff at the house. I was going to cook what we had at the house for dinner or eat left overs. No big deal. We have definitely survived with less money. Just annoying because we aren't huge fans of being poor. Anyway, we are driving home and I'm sleeping because I'm so exhausted, and James wakes me up to say he's just been pulled over for not having our registration up to date. Really? Another thing on our plate? And when I went to take the car to get inspected as soon as we got home, 1. the place was closed and 2. our check engine light is on (meaning it won't pass inspection and we can't renew registration until inspection passes). Basically, we were down a car for 2ish weeks until we can figure out how to get the light off. This was just one more thing to add to our pot of good luck for the weekend. Oh and to top it off, the AC in the big car isn't working either.

Dad texted me about having dinner that Monday and asked if he should come to me or if I could come to him. I've gone to Raleigh the last two times and with the car being out, I told him he had to come to me. No big deal, we usually try to switch off anyway. The kids were supposed to have VBS so originally Dad was going to come by himself but with no way to get them there all week, we decided to just stay home but that meant Mom had to come too. I warned them that my house was an oven and they both assured me that it was fine as they have had to live without AC before and it wasn't a big deal. Mom and the kids had a great time and ate outside where it was a little bit cooler than inside. And they showed up with 3 more fans! Yay! We put the box fan in the boy's room and it really cooled off quickly. All the windows were still open but at least we had a bit of circulation happening. Josh also let us borrow one of his big fans to help get the air moving which was awesome.

Come Tuesday morning, sleep had happened and I actually woke up cold but I get cold easily. It was projected to be 95ish outside and we were dreading it a little. Then Dad stopped by work and hands me an envelope with $300 in it to help get stuff fixed in the house! Are you kidding me? I was shocked! James and I were trying not to complain as it really wasn't the end of the world that we were sweaty but now we could buy window units or something! We actually wanted to get the car up and running first so we were planning on putting the money towards that (probably this weekend). The Lord provides! Such a blessing.

Fast forward to Wednesday afternoon. The kids took "naps" and I sat in our pool with the neighbor Elijah. I had to explain it was "adult swim time" meaning no splashing or waves. Basically, I was hot and wanted to cool off for a minute. He was awesome and tried not to move too much lol. Then the little ones woke up and adult swim time was most definitely over haha. My rule with the pool is once you're in, you stay in. If you get out, you're done (to try and keep the grass out of the pool). Peyton was the first out so I was inside drying him off when Bekah's mom, Barbara, walked in my house with two AC window units! WHAT?! TWO?! I couldn't believe she had just gone and bought those for us. What sweet neighbors we have. She changed clothes and quickly helped get them up and running (she and Bekah make a good team haha). And by the time we went to bed, the house had cooled off so much and I woke up FREEZING! I called Mom and she started crying on the phone. The Lord is so good. He has provided so much for us in 2 days!

Is not having AC in the dead of summer crummy? Yes. Is AC a luxury? Most definitely. Would we have survived without it? You bet. Are we thankful our house is cool again? Oh yeah! When everything broke all at once, we were obviously not thrilled with it, but we knew it wasn't the end of the world. We would rather be without AC than without heat (which that might be the case this winter so stay tuned for that!). We aren't afraid of sweat. Can we live without a dishwasher? Duh. My family didn't have a working one for years. And you know what? We both know how to wash dishes by hand (gasp!). Would we have survived without two cars? Yes, we've already done that this year. We still don't have the inspection done but we are hoping to get that taken care of this weekend. We were willing to face this week and next with a smile on our sweaty faces. But God is so gracious and puts the most precious people in our life to come a long side of us and bless us when we need it. We are so so grateful.

Side note. James' job situation is still not good. He has applied to so many different places and nothing has worked out yet. We tried the power company last year and that fell through. Glen has been trying to find him another job and did find one a few months ago but it wasn't going to pay enough so we had to say no. James applied at Walmart (we have a few friends that work at the distribution center in Henderson) and that fell through. Then we thought missions. Our precious friends Tim and Candi are moving to Canada at the end of the year and they joked that we should move with them. James and I have always had a heart for missions so we thought, sure, why not? But we would need jobs up there (we don't have seminary so IMB isn't an option yet so independent funding would have to be the way to go). James' company has a branch in Quebec and we thought maybe he could transfer. He called and everything is in French so that kind of went no where. Then I had lunch with my sweet friend Heather. Her hubs is in the National Guard and she said James should do that. It sounded like a great idea but James pretty much said no immediately. I was little bummed as this could be a good job and give us good benefits. But he said no and I decided not to push it. But just the other day he told me that he felt like the NG was the way he needed to go. He sat down with Jeff (who happens to be a recruiter) this afternoon and the plan is to get him all signed up by next week. Scary? Yes. Am I nervous? No. I'm actually trying to make myself nervous and give myself those doubting butterflies but nothing. Is this the right path? I think so but I don't know yet. I trust James knows what the Lord needs him to be doing . The plan isn't to go into active duty. He would still have to go to basic training and specialty training but he wants to get a job working full time with the NG (mechanic). Deployment is a possibility if something drastic happens with the military but it's not a definite. It's still new and I don't understand half of what is going on but the Lord has been good to us so far and I trust that if this is where James needs to be, He will get James exactly the job he needs to have. Pray for us. Pray that James will get this if the Lord wills. I am selfishly praying that he does as James needs out of his current work situation. Pray for a smooth transition. Pray James will pass the required tests. Pray James will get a high score to get into the job he wants. Pray that he ships to basic soon (the sooner he leaves the sooner he comes home). Pray that this will happen. Thanks!

I'll keep you posted as we find out more. The Lord provides for his children. Such a sweet promise to hold onto. And he is faithful.

Psalm 6

LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. Have mercy on me, LORD, for I am faint; heal me, LORD, for my bones are in agony. My soul is in deep anguish. How long, LORD, how long?

Turn, LORD, and deliver me; save me because of your unfailing love. Among the dead no one proclaims your name. Who praises you from the grave?

I am worn out from my groaning.

All night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. My eyes grow weak with sorrow; they fail because of all my foes.

Away from me, all you who do evil, for the LORD has heard my weeping. The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD accepts my prayer. All my enemies will be overwhelmed with shame and anguish; they will turn back and suddenly be put to shame.

Mafia Mama

You read correctly. I'm a Mafia Mama. Ever since we moved in (2 years ago!), we have been friends with our sweet neighbors Frank and Barbara. On the weekends, their grandkids, Elijah and Lucas have come over and the boys have become fast friends. I never bothered to find out if the kids belonged to their daughter or son, we just knew the kids were all friends. Fast forward to December (or February rather) when the kids were out in the street and who else was there but their mama. I have this weird phobia of meeting moms because it means we have to hang out, especially if our kids are friends. There's this obligation to get along or at least have conversation. Heaven forbid lol. Anyways, I said hi to their mama (I think her name was Becky) and that was it. We never hung out again. Until I realized that the kids were there during the week some and wanted to play with my kids. Their Mama walked over one day when I was out hanging with Josh and we struck up conversation. Turns out her name is Bekah and she'd moved in with her parents back at Xmas. Needless to say, it took one conversation (and a little bit of facebook stalking) and we became fast friends. Now, our kids are literally together every single day and we are the best of friends. So glad to have fun neighbors!! Oh, the mafia thing? We've dubbed our kids the Mill Creek Mafia so naturally we are the mafia mamas :)

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside still waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil for you are with me; your rod and staff they comfort me. You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of The Lord forever.

New Blog

Time for a new blog. The old is gone and we're starting fresh with this one :) Hope you enjoy.
